The hospital has continued with its core mission of serving children with disabilities, specializing in orthopaedic and plastic surgery. The hospital which is registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia as a specialist hospital in orthopaedics with a bed capacity of 42 is managed by a team of five Sisters residing at the hospital compound. The Sisters work hand in hand with members of the board in terms of activity implementation. St. John Paul II Orthopaedic Mission Hospital is privileged to have a team of eleven (11) very experienced Orthopaedic Surgeons assisted by a team of fifteen (15) nurses, twenty four (24) paramedics, seventeen (17) general workers and eight (8) responsible for administration. Spiritually, the hospital is supported by a chaplain and also the team of religious Sisters. The hospital runs morning and afternoon out-patient clinics from Monday to Friday. With one clean theatre, surgeries are done from Tuesday to Sunday while Monday has been set aside for cleaning and maintaining the theatre.
The hospital has the following activities: Consultations, X-Ray examinations, Laboratory tests, Surgical Interventions, Ward Admissions, Physiotherapy and Prosthetic/Orthotic Fitting. The operations of the hospital have increased vastly since its establishment and so also have its running costs. The hospital exists to provide free top quality orthopaedic surgery and care for children with disabilities and enabling them to lead a more productive and fulfilling life.
Adults with orthopaedic needs are charged a fee of K125 as consultation which is shared between the surgeon and the hospital at the rate of 55% and 45% respectively. On average, the hospital is given close to US$900 or slightly less depending on a surgery to be undertaken for the use of the theatre. Patients are expected to pay for the implants needed for surgery and they also contribute to the hospital for the use of the X-ray, Lab, Pharmacy, Orthotics and Prosthetic workshop and Physiotherapy facilities. From 1995, the hospital has carried out 15, 969 surgeries, of which 9, 127 were done for free
